How We Increased Website Traffic by 81% Using Competitor Keyword Research (No Ads)

Most websites struggle to grow organic traffic because they guess what to write — instead of using real search data.

We didn’t want guesses. We wanted proof.

By analyzing competitor keyword data and building content intentionally around it, we increased our website traffic by 81% without spending a dollar on ads.

Here’s the exact process we used — and how you can apply it to your own site.

Step 1: Find Competitor Pages Already Ranking on Google

First, head over to Ubersuggest and plug in the domain name of your biggest competitor. Hit that “search” button and get ready for the magic.

This process doesn’t copy competitors — it analyzes what Google already rewards and improves upon it with more relevant, higher-quality content.

Step 2: Identify High-Traffic Pages You Can Compete With

On the left-hand side, click “top pages.” Boom! What you’re looking at now is a list of the best-performing pages from your competition. These are the pages that Google loves and sends massive amounts of traffic to.

But what if all that juicy traffic was coming to your site instead?

Step 3: Extract Keywords Driving Organic Traffic

Here’s where things get good. Pick a page from your competitor that you wish was yours. Once you’ve selected it, click on the “view all” button under the "Estimated Visits (EST Visits)" column to reveal all the keywords driving traffic to that page.

You’ll see a big list of keywords, and don’t just focus on the high-traffic ones. Even the small, easy-to-rank-for keywords add up, and combined, they can send thousands of visitors your way.

Step 4: Build a Strategic Keyword List (Not a Dump)

Export those keywords into a master list. Be selective—just because your competitor ranks for certain keywords doesn’t mean they’re a perfect fit for your business. Tailor your list to align with your strategy and niche.

Step 5: Create Content That Outperforms Existing Results

Here’s the kicker: to steal their traffic, you have to outdo their content. That means creating in-depth, high-value content that hits all the right keywords. You can either roll up your sleeves and write the content yourself or bring in a pro to do it for you—just make sure it’s top-notch.

Better content + the right keywords = traffic gold.

This approach is part of a broader SEO strategy for small businesses focused on sustainable, long-term growth.
